successful in AA service, this member hit bottom in his private life

For most of the 1980s, I was busy with General Service activities while staying sober in AA and had become pretty well known. In the late 1980s, I was elected chairperson for our area. It was both intimidating and thrilling to be called to take on the considerable task of leadership and administration required of this job. I became even more busy with my new responsibilities while I had part-time work to cover some expenses. But life was good; many new interests were rapidly developing; my painting was flourishing in the studio and I was gaining a competence I'd never imagined. My AA duties had me traveling far and wide to lead meetings of various sorts; they had me conducting workshops and group inventories as well as consulting on many matters having to do with our Traditions and with carrying our message.
