Learning to live

Last night's speaker talked about the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of recovery. I knew what he was talking about. My physical recovery began by detoxing in a treatment center. I was exhausted most of the first months of my sobriety as I experienced not only the physical change, but also the emotional upheaval of having to face life without my "best friend." Eating right gave my body a chance to heal. I replaced the alcohol with the sugar in fruit, candy, juices or ice cream and, of course, lots of coffee. Soon I found I could walk, swim, dance, and even make love, sober. Considering the state of my body after twenty-eight years of drinking, this was a miracle.
