Some Never Make It

A child lives with the pain of a father who couldn't stop drinking

My parents were in Holland on a business trip. A dreadful thought entered my young mind. Would my parents ever leave me or each other? When they returned, I asked them my simple yet complicated question. They looked at each other and said, "No, honey, we will always be together. We promise." Then they presented me with a pair of blue wooden shoes which comforted me. Life was so simple. Until the shoes didn't fit anymore.
