Divorcing the Demons

My biggest demon has always been fear, which pursued me with a vengeance. I drank alcohol to silence the relentless voices. The pain led me to AA where I eagerly crawled aboard the lifeboat. I'd been paddling in my rowboat for forty-three years, screaming for someone to bring me the other oar and teach me how to row myself into the coursing current of life. With the love of the people in AA, and the Steps, I learned to chart my way into happier waters. Recently, I celebrated twenty-six years of sobriety. But it hasn't been all smooth sailing.
