Which side are the numbers on?

I often hear in meetings today that only one in thirty-six alcoholics who get to AA stay sober. I recently heard twice in meetings that ninety-five percent of all alcoholics end up destroying themselves with alcohol. I attended my first closed AA meeting in December 1977 in Memphis, Tennessee, and as I think back to my early days, I remember an American Indian with thirty years' sobriety who once visited our group. I also attended meetings regularly with another member who had thirty years and some who had fifteen. I don't ever recall any of these AAs giving out grim, rigid statistics on what the chances were for recovery. We were given the message of hope. With over two million once hopeless alcoholics now in recovery throughout the world, I believe the numbers are on our side.
