Low voices came through the curtains. Snatches of conversations filtered through, interspersed with medical terms and names of body parts. I was awaiting ambulatory surgery in the outpatient surgery department at a small community hospital, and I was alone. I'd brought back issues of news magazines but they depicted the senseless horror of terrorist bombings and offered little comfort. I couldn't concentrate enough to read a book.
