Taking responsibility for the past

My wife and I recently moved from the house she'd lived in for seventeen years to an old house we bought and fixed up to be ours. I shared her former house with her for five years; we were two sober alcoholics working through some of the wreckage of their past and creating a new life together. We'd both been sober several years when we met, but she'd spent many years of her drinking life in that house, and active alcoholism had compounded the normal clutter left behind by her raising three kids single-handedly.
