When I was just over a year sober, I went to Peru for three weeks with a small touring group. I was the only sober person in the group. When I arrived in Cuzco, I had one phone number. Using my rather limited Spanish, I called it and was given a name and an address. Since it was our first night at high elevation, it was recommended that we rest quietly. We were also warned not to wander around alone, as American tourists were prime rip-off targets. Nevertheless, I asked directions from the hotel clerk and set off alone in search of the address.
