What is "typical"?

The article "Little Things Like Words" really disturbed me. The author referred to the characteristics of "the typical alcoholic" and what is and is not good for such a person's recovery. This is way off the beam, in my opinion. I read this article at a time when I was feeling weak and vulnerable, and my reaction was: maybe I don't belong in AA. I happen to be an alcoholic who has had to learn how to be assertive, which he feels is "a liability for recovering alcoholics." It has saved my life, for I was the depressive type, and being a doormat--victim or volunteer--resulted in anger turned inward, a situation many people, including myself, believe leads to depression. When depressed I either have wanted to drink or commit suicide.
