Down but not out

In "As Long As God Needs Us" in the July Grapevine, Adam N. mentions that a speaker with thirty-eight years of sobriety asserted that "early members of Alcoholics Anonymous were all down-and-outers, skid-row types." In my opinion, that's pure AA mythology which gets passed about even among AA members old enough to know better.
