Asking for help was always an extremely difficult thing for me to do. I truly believed that my problems were best handled quietly and on my own. So when I first began attending AA meetings, I worked the program my own way. For over three years, my life continued to fall apart as I bounced in and out of the rooms of AA. I never had a sponsor, a home group, or a commitment, nor did I follow any of the other suggestions that were made. My liver was damaged. I was out of work, my wife had all but given up on me, and my two young children didn't have a father they could turn to.
