In the spirit of Step Three

I read with interest Mike L.'s article on "Judaism and the Lord's Prayer" (January 1997). While it's clear that the sentiments expressed in that prayer echo many ancient Jewish entreaties, the fact remains that the Lord's Prayer is quintessentially a Christian one. It appears in the Gospels of both Matthew and Luke and is part of the liturgy of most, if not all, Christian church services. Accordingly, I have always found the prayer's use at AA meetings inappropriate and off-putting. It excludes non-Christians of whatever faith and its recitation belies the stated nonreligious credo of AA. For me, it violates the spirit of the suggestion that we seek a conscious contact with God as we understand him.
