Shortly after my third AA birthday, and a Fourth Step and Fifth Step with my sponsor, my life seemed to fall apart. I lost my job and my home, a long-term relation ended, and everything seemed bleak and hopeless for a very long time. I struggled with what I thought was my inability to do the Third Step, but my sponsor finally suggested that I really study and begin to work the Sixth and Seventh Steps. Things began to change. After nearly drinking several times during that year, on the day that I picked up my fourth-year chip, I prayed to my Higher Power to give me the strength to do what was in front of me graciously and gracefully.
