The Human Hands That Help Us

Like many of us, I didn't believe in a power greater than myself. Not that I didn't want to. When, as a teenager, I began to have doubts, I went to my minister. He was supposed to provide me with certainty. Instead, he suggested that I read some books. But I'd heard him quote from those books in sermons that I didn't approve of, so I wasn't about to read them. Soon questions of faith and doubt were beside the point, for I went to college and discovered a new power and a new self through alcohol.
