A Hindu-Brahmin woman finds recovery

I am a woman alcoholic from India. I am also a Brahmin, which is supposed to be the highest caste and very orthodox among Hindus. Seven years ago, I voluntarily retired from a national research institute. I was a successful scientist whose research papers were published in American and British scientific journals, a matter of great pride to Indian scientists. But none of these "great things" in life stopped me from becoming an acute alcoholic, sick of myself and my drinking, and desperate to stop when I came to AA. Today I know if I hadn't stopped when I did I would have died or been locked up in an asylum. This is the truth. I am now nearly fifteen years sober. I feel proud to be in the AA Fellowship, considering the strong social stigma against women alcoholics that still exists and which I believe keeps so many of my sisters in hiding.
