Removing the Language Barrier

A blizzard was predicted. Just before the snow started to fall, I took a Polish-speaking woman to the detox unit at a nearby hospital. After the snow stopped, someone called to tell me that a member of our Polish-speaking group had hung himself; he couldn't find alcohol in his home and due to the blizzard couldn't get out to buy any. These experiences were indeed sobering, reminding me once again of the progressive, fatal nature of alcoholism. I felt immense gratitude that I didn't have to drink.
