Giving It Back

My best day sober began about eleven P.M. after my wife and I had spent most of the day in the town of Oroville watching our daughter Katie's eighth grade basketball tournament. The day had gone well, and even though our team came in third, things had gone smoothly--unlike many past basketball games I'd watched while drinking. We had just gone to bed and were dropping off to sleep when the phone rang. It was the night nurse at the rest home where my wife's grandmother had been for the last twenty-eight days. He advised us that we should come out as soon as possible.
