In August 1987, at age thirty-six, I finally got myself checked into an alcohol treatment center at the VA hospital. I was in very bad shape, perhaps near death, and I nearly went into DTs. I was placed on drugs to curb the effects of withdrawal. Twenty years of hard drinking had taken their toll.
