My Life With an Alcoholic

From time to time, the Grapevine publishes articles by nonalcoholic friends of AA. We wanted to print this story, written by the husband of an alcoholic woman, because it is a testimony to the destructive force of alcohol--"cunning, baffling, powerful!

It was forty-seven years ago that I met the girl destined to be my wife. I was an engineering student at a university, and she was a student nurse at a city hospital. We fell in love, and married two years later after we graduated. We moved several times during the advancement of my career, and had three daughters and one son over the course of fourteen years. We had a good life, mostly good times as well as the occasional misunderstandings that might happen in any good marriage. Liquor was never a problem for either of us during those early years.
