Sobriety for ourselves

On October 29, 1959, I pushed a button that changed my life. It rang the doorbell of the old intergroup office on St. James Street in Philadelphia. A slightly-built man, with pale blue eyes that seemed to look right through me, opened the door and asked, "Do you have a problem?" I replied that I did. He gave me a great big smile and said, "I'm just one drink away from a drunk myself. Come on in. Let's stay away from that one drink for one day at a time together."
