Mysterious Ways

In 1974, when I was about six months sober, someone gave me a part-time job. The job didn't pay anything, but it was enough of a challenge for me to get there on time. I was still fighting withdrawal symptoms from Valium, so performing simple tasks like emptying the wastepaper baskets and doing a little typing was more than enough of a challenge for me. I was heavily damaged by alcohol and I had tremors. I was also full of shame about being an alcoholic.
