Free Thinking Allowed

Over fifteen years ago, I "took the Third Step" with a sponsor, without asking much about her belief system. As time went by, I realized I'd been subjected to some of the principles and practices of her Higher Power, not mine. (I was still searching, so perhaps I was considered fair game.) This happened several more times, and I've come to believe that people in recovery need to ask prospective sponsors about their belief systems to help them assess whether that sponsor will work for them. At least they'll have the choice to decide whether the issue is relevant to them or not. My son has become a second-generation member of AA, and watching him go through similar experiences with sponsors trying to push their own religions has brought me out of the silence at last.
