Simplicity itself

I am an alcoholic and a drug addict and I came to AA when I was twenty-three. I've never felt unwelcome at any AA meeting. Very early in my sobriety (at about three weeks), I asked someone how I should identify myself at meetings because a lot of people were saying things like "I'm cross-addicted," "I'm an alcoholic and a. . ." I was much too nervous to give a long-winded preamble to who I was, so this person's suggestion suited me and maybe it will help someone else. He said, "When at an AA meeting, I'm an alcoholic, and when I'm at an NA meeting, I'm an addict." Real simple. This suggestion turned out to be the absolutely right thing to do. I believe God spoke to me through this man. I thought I was terminally unique and that I was facing this identity crisis for the first time ever in the history of AA.
