The article "Anything and Everything Except Sobriety" (May 1998) presents me with an opportunity to share what my home group is facing from a different perspective. I think the writer misses one key point. As a sober alcoholic in AA, my function in life is to be of maximum service to others and find opportunities to be of service on the firing line of life. The writer seems to get this and is in fact on the firing line right there in his home group--and they are lucky to have an old-timer that cares as much as he does. Then he ends his letter with the notion that we all ought to "Think, Think, Think." Wrong. If I could think the drink through, think the character defect through or think anything through at all, I wouldn't need AA, God, or meetings. I believe the answer is always to turn to God, share the difficulty with another alcoholic, and then turn to helping others. Of course, if I'm practicing the Eleventh Step, and inviting God into my life through this daily discipline, I receive intuitive thoughts all along.
