Off and Running

He took his first drink at the age of twenty-six--and went downhill fast

Alcohol was very much a part of my life as soon as I was born into an alcoholic family. The arguments and hurtful retaliations in my parents' marriage made me know I would never touch the stuff. My abstinence lasted for quite a while, through my teen years, into my early marriage and until I was twenty-six. Most of my friends imbibed with only mild repercussions, while I stayed with my juices, soft drinks, and coffee. How was I to know that I was already an alcoholic waiting to happen.
