Big Tom

My friend Tom died in April 1992, alone in a motel room in Flagstaff, Arizona. He was sixty-six years old. He'd been in and around AA for forty years, but the most sobriety he could get was two years. He was in seven treatment centers, and after each treatment, each return to AA, he believed he'd come back for good, that he'd "really got the program this time."
