Imagine going to your home group and being avoided by people with ten or more years of sobriety because they heard you volunteer your time with people with AIDS. Just for a moment, think about what it might be like for a gay man just getting sober to hear someone with "good sobriety" put down gays, blacks, and women. I've been there. I've heard the disparaging remarks about gays and lesbians--in a straight meeting where "love and tolerance is our code." The only reason I stuck around was because I was a hopeless drunk and I had nowhere else to go.
