AA in Cuba

It was with great delight that I read in the January issue an article about an American journalist and his experience at an AA meeting in my native land of Cuba. His description of the meeting of Grupo Habana brought back unforgettable memories. But I wanted to rectify one piece of inaccurate information in that article regarding the date in which this group was founded. Grupo Habana is indeed one of the oldest AA groups in Cuba, and certainly one of the largest and more active. But seniority in this case is held by Grupo Sueño (dream), founded on January 22, 1993 by the first four Cuban alcoholics to get sober. These alcoholics were twelfth-stepped by a group of AA members from California, who traveled to Cuba with the sole purpose of passing the message on. If my memory does not fail me, Grupo Habana was founded in the summer of 1993, approximately eight months after Grupo Sueño.
