Balancing act

Maybe it's another paradox of the AA program, but to me the tough times are easier than the good times. The first four years of my sobriety were one opportunity after another for growth. I lost jobs due to injuries, my ex-wife died of cancer, and I was faced with providing for three school-age children on a part-time income. Because of my history of drink, her family took me to court to obtain custody of the kids. To make a bad situation worse, my part-time employer initiated cutbacks and informed me I was only allowed ten hours per week! This would not even cover routine expenses let alone the attorney and court costs.
