I'm a woman alcoholic in my tenth year of sobriety and an eager student of the Big Book. I began this study over eight years ago with a group, and in the beginning it was a skeptical exercise on my part. Not because of the Big Book's gender-dated (yet artfully written) language, but because the word "God" was all over the pages! I was a militant atheist, and my mind was closed with bear-trap hinges and a giant padlock made of self-reliance, scared ego, intellectual rationalizations--all welded shut with anger and self-pity.
