Once every thousand years

I am continually reading things that refer to January 1, 2000 as the "turn of the millennium" and am at a loss as to how this bit of misinformation got started. (Maybe it's because of the Y2K bug uproar, but that has nothing to do with the end of this millennium or the beginning of the next--that has to do with double-digit zeroes.) The last year of the twentieth century is the year 2000, just as the last year of the nineteenth century was the year 1900.
