This side of the dirt

I was just finishing an article in the Grapevine when it dawned on me how my life has changed as a direct result of my Higher Power and the Fellowship of AA and I just wanted to write you. As I sit in my new office in a large chemical firm, I can remember the days when I couldn't work because I'd been out all night having what I used to call fun. From the time I was eleven until I was thirty-two years old, I drank and lived life like there was no tomorrow. I was afraid to live and scared to die. My typical answer to people who talked to me was, "I'm fine, and you?" At the end, my wife lost all respect for me, my neighbors talked about me, while I tolerated my children only as long as I had something to drink. But I was fine. I also had a part-time job teaching karate to kids in the neighborhood, but they eventually quit when the teacher was too drunk to show up.
