One of my dreams has been to live on the road--working, camping, seeing the country, and meeting new people. Twelve years into sobriety the opportunity arose. My best friend, Eileen, and I took off for a trial run for the winter in the desert north of Yuma, Arizona. We weren't really properly equipped (we had a van, an ancient eleven-foot teardrop trailer, and a twenty-six inch TV!). We were unsure of what to expect and even if this was the lifestyle we truly desired, but in just a few weeks we knew: this is the life!
