A Polite People

At my very first AA meeting, I heard the Serenity Prayer for the first time. Of all the prayers I have heard, I thought, this one seemed as if it was meant for me. I hoped I could find a copy of it so I could write it down and wouldn't forget it. I found it in the Grapevine and made myself a copy. I don't recall much more of that first meeting except that everyone introduced themselves by their first names and declared that they were alcoholics. I didn't want to do that, but I did it as I thought they might kick me out if I didn't. The meeting closed holding hands and saying the Lord's Prayer. I thought that was very nice.
