I'll Do Anything

It was Friday morning around 6:30. I was gassing up my route truck as I do every Friday. While standing in front of the cashier filling out my gas card, I smelled alcohol on the breath of someone waiting in line behind me. I really didn't pay that much attention to it. I just turned my head a little and without looking up said, "Go ahead of me." This guy stepped around me and asked the cashier for a pack of cigarettes. His voice is what caught my attention. It was weak and sad. I looked up at him and man, he looked bad! It was his eyes. They had more despair and hopelessness in them than I'd ever seen in my life.
