I wish to share my feelings on the saying, "If you just don't pick up the first drink, everything will be okay." Like a lot of recovering alcoholics, I chafed at that idea in early sobriety because in some ways my life seemed to get worse. One year into sobriety, I was downsized from my job in a bad economy. I went to meetings, kept in touch with my sponsor, and, above all, didn't pick up that first drink.
