Just Another Day
All the hoopla about the next millennium is a mood changer for me, and anything that alters my mood is dangerous. The range of emotions attached to the Year 2000 goes from elation to fear. I cannot afford to live in these extremes. I remember the very first time I noticed the year 2000 on the expiration date of vitamins I was purchasing. It sent chills up my spine and spaced me out a little. I stood remembering an old childhood rumor--that the world would come to an end when a certain envelope containing a letter about the miracle of Bernadette at Lourdes was opened. My friend Michele and I stood on the corner of our block hugging and kissing goodbye as we were sure we would never see one another again. Upon waking the next morning, I was so relieved to be alive. I never did find out if there was such a letter and if it was ever opened. One of my early AA sponsors always used to say, "Don't believe the hype!"
