Jail Break

On March 9, 1990, I received my final DWI. I was charged with felony, attempted suicide, and assaulting officers in the performance of their duties. After a night in the county jail speaking with several officers and the county psychiatrist, I was placed in the psychiatric wing of a local hospital. I was to remain there until I went back to court. This time, no bail was offered. My options were finally exhausted. I was at the mercy of the courts. I had been caught driving while drunk several times before but had always managed a way out. Not this time. The judge explained that he could order me back to court to face all the charges against me, which would probably land me in the state prison, or I could be committed to the state mental hospital. Neither option I relished. Then the county psychiatrist presented another possibility: treatment. And so began my journey into sobriety.
