Turning Point

I had been in the anti-war and women's movement for ten years and came to AA an atheist and a Marxist, and my "conscious spiritual development" was to elude me for a long time. As in all things in my life, I was still a rebel and called Trotsky my higher power. I had no question that I was an alcoholic. I heard many stories from others similar to my own drinking career. In those first several years I went to many meetings, did service, and had a sponsor. In retrospect, I am sure she was frustrated with my refusal to even look at spiritual things. I wouldn't work the Steps because of the Higher Power element.
