In the summer of 1976, I made it to my first meeting of AA and was stunned to see people laughing and smiling. Almost all of them came up to me and shook my hand and told me they were glad I was there. A few of the men brought me over to the coffee pot, got me a cup, and seemed to show a genuine interest in me. I can still remember thinking, "I wish I could be happy like that." Then we all went upstairs for the meeting and I got blown away for the second time. When someone brought up a problem in sobriety, three or four people would talk about going through it, where they found the answer in the Big Book, and how it had all turned out.
