My Worst Day Sober

My worst day sober, which struck when I was four and a half years sober, actually encompassed four days. At 10:25 P.M., April 18, 1999, while I was talking on the phone to my son, a beep announced another call. It was my first wife's husband calling to tell me that my sixteen-year old daughter, Jessica, had been in an automobile accident and had been killed. I could not believe it. I had talked to her just two days earlier. We had been talking, laughing, and making plans for her to spend the summer with my new wife and me. My brother and his wife came over and spent a couple of hours with us, but what could they say? What could they do? My life had been shattered.
