I met Katherine at my first AA meeting. I walked into the Sunday-school room and stood there, assessing the scene. A few people stood at the coffee pot; most were seated around a rectangular table that seemed to fill the room. A thin, red-headed woman, about sixty-five, hurried to my side. "Is this your first meeting?" she asked. I didn't even answer; I only could nod. The woman took my hand. "I'm Katherine, and I'm an alcoholic," she said. "Come sit by me. Everything is going to be okay."
