In 1996, when I had been sober six years, I had a terrible accident. I lost both of my legs due to the crushing blow of a machine and was in the hospital thirty days. But AA members were there to support my family and me. I also received hundreds of get-well cards from all over the United States, Canada, Europe, and Australia, because someone put my name up on the Internet. When I went to rehabilitation to learn how to adjust to life without legs, my sponsor and another AA member said they would bring a meeting to me, the first in that rehab. It was just what I needed. Twenty of my dearest friends came. My AA friends also had a benefit dance and auction to raise money for my family's travel expenses to and from the rehab, which was 150 miles from my home.
