Mental Obsessions

Obsession was the name of an overpriced perfume advertised in upscale fashion mags when I began getting sober. Wan girls in windblown gowns showed how the scent could haunt a man's mind to distraction. I thought the word ridiculous. "Obsession" was way too melodramatic. Over the top wasn't my style. Understatement was. Sure, I thought about alcohol a lot. I'd thought a lot about many things over the years: wife, business, property, money, reputation. And they were all going away, weren't they? So thinking about booze would, too.
