Talking to an Idiot

"Go to meetings." These three words are the foundation of my sobriety today. I first got sober in 1981, and after several relatively simple years, I developed a solid, fun sobriety, went back to college, and became a substance abuse counselor. However, after about eight years, I decided to get out of counseling and, for some unknown reason, I stopped going to meetings. I also moved away from the area in which I had a strong relationship with the recovering community. This proved to be a nearly fatal mistake. For two years, my disease went bananas, the quality of my life slowly deteriorated and, in spite of all I had been through and had witnessed, I chose to drink again.
