I appreciate Brenna M.'s courage in bringing up the topic of hugs and hidden agendas ("R-E-S-P-E-C-T," July 2000). We all have defects and baggage, I guess, and recovery for me has come most slowly and stubbornly in the realm of sexuality. I know my thoughts have been less than saintly during hugs from time to time, but I was taught well: You don't do anything to jeopardize a fellow alcoholic's chance at recovery. AA meetings need to be safe places, where we can leave our armor at the door. How did Bill W. put it? "Above all, we are convinced that reckless romancing is no longer a way of life for us." Let's save the night moves for the night clubs.
