I have just returned from a hospital with so much gratitude that I had to write about it. My 45-year-old brother was declared brain dead due to complications from alcoholism, and my family had to make the decision to disconnect his life-support. He died nine hours later. He never recognized the insidiousness of our disease and just how cunning, baffling, and powerful alcohol is for an alcoholic.
