Why I drank

Why do some people keep insisting that the reason alcoholics drink is because there is something emotionally wrong or unstable in the alcoholic? I quote: "All of us drank for one reason and only one reason: because we didn't feel good about ourselves." ("Rx for an Alcoholic," April 2001). If that were the reason I drank, then I would still be drinking some days. Or my five years in therapy could have cured me. Perhaps some people would rather be mentally ill than have a physical difference in the way the body processes alcohol. But I drank because I have a physical ailment called alcoholism.
