My first meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous was on September 12, 1979, the day I got my driver's license back after a thirty-day suspension for driving while intoxicated. I'd spent the day getting high-risk insurance, paying my fine, and meeting with a doctor at a local treatment center to determine whether I was an alcoholic. He determined that I had a drinking problem (I knew that), but said he would sign my paper to get my license so that I could keep my job and support my two-year-old daughter and myself--if I would accept help. Treatment was not an good option for me since I didn't trust anyone to keep my daughter for that time. The kind doctor asked if he could have someone call me, and I agreed.
