Whose rules?

I read with dismay the letter "Stand Fast" in the June 2001 issue. The Third Tradition states: "The only requirement for AA membership is a desire to stop drinking." It says nothing about having to present ourselves in any particular fashion, especially not in a manner conducive to recovery. This is just a rule the writer's sponsor made up for himself (or got from someone else). Thank God that this isn't a fact for us all. I would never have made it thirteen years if someone had told me I had to behave, or dress, a certain way. My sponsor told me to go to meetings and not drink in-between, work the Steps, pray daily, and call her if I felt like drinking. Just that was a pretty tall order for me. More power to Anonymous for staying sober with someone laying non-AA "rules" on him.
